Hi Guys! We’re so glad you’re here! I just wanted to share a little bit about me and my family so you can get to know us a little better. My name is Hetal and with my daughter Sejal, I am on a mission to make the ketogenic lifestyle a delicious and sustainable one.
You may be wondering what the ketogenic diet is. Well, in a nutshell, it means that you eat fat to burn fat. It also means that the foods you consume are high fat, moderate protein and very low carbohydrates. I am not a doctor or nutritionist, so you can certainly learn about the nuts and bolts of the ketogenic diet from more qualified professionals out there. I’m simply here to help you maintain this lifestyle with delicious recipes, tips, personal experiences and motivation.
So why did I start the keto diet, you ask? It was definitely my husband, Shrikant’s, idea. For as long as I’ve known him, he would always try (and fail at) yo-yo diets that allowed him to lose weight, only to gain it back. He never came across a plan that was sustainable for the long run. To add to this, he had been on several medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, acid reflux, etc. So when he came across the ketogenic diet, I was sure it was another one of his hair-brained ideas to lose weight.
After he tried the keto diet for a few months, I noticed that he was indeed losing weight. Hmmm….interesting, I thought! He is not the most proficient in the kitchen, so maybe I needed to look into this so that I could help out with his meals. While researching more and more on what the ketogenic diet was, I learned that it was not only for weight loss, but it was also great for all sorts of other ailments – most importantly, INFLAMATION!
For the most part, I consider myself pretty healthy. I’m not overweight, I’m pretty active and I don’t really have health issues like high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. However, I had been suffering from joint pain for years and the doctors just couldn’t diagnose it. When I read that carbohydrates (sugar, in all forms) cause inflamation in the body and that inflamation is what is causing my joint pain, I thought, what the heck! I am going to give keto a chance.
Well, let me tell you…the first few weeks on keto were pure hell! I should also mention at this point that I am a vegetarian (the only one in our family). I just could not find enough food to eat that did not have carbs in it. While Shrikant could eat chicken, eggs, bacon, etc. I had nothing! I soon gave up and went back to eating as I was before (rice, chapati, bread, pasta, etc).
Few months later, and still suffering from the random joint pains, I decided to give keto another go. Only this time, I had armed myself with a pantry filled with keto approved staples and my sense of adventure! I jumped in with what I do best – experiment with food! I kept trying out different recipes and finding ways to make foods that I was used to, only with little to no carbs. It certainly helped that this was a high fat diet and who doesn’t love butter, ghee, cheese, etc?
So, long story short, I have been on the ketogenic diet since December 2017 and have been joint pain free for awhile now. Shrikant is off of all the medications he was taking earlier and about 35 pounds lighter. My daughter Sejal, who looked at us as if we were crazy, has also seen the light. Being a college student, she finds value in being able to lose some weight here and there.
I feel strongly about the keto diet because of all the benefits that I have witnessed first hand and I would love to help anyone who wants to try it. Since learning how to cook and eat for the long term is vital to the sustainability of this lifestyle, I hope you will accompany me in this journey. Remember, it’s easy to keto…if you know how!
